Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program Funding for Schools in Need

The vision behind the “Adopt-A-Class” Scholarship Program established in 2005 was to provide free tours to schools with financial need. Teachers from Title I (low income) schools can apply for the program by completing the application steps listed below. Teachers will be asked to provide information to support that their school does not have the necessary funds to enjoy a field trip to the Mission. If the school is interested in securing funding for one of the education programs (such as Journeys to the Past, Making the Grade or Mission Matters,) or transportation, please indicate that as well. The Mission Preservation Foundation encourages all Title I schools to book tours in the fall. It is recommended that Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program applications be sent in no later than October 31, 2019. Adopt-A-Class tours are not able to be scheduled for the months of May and June.

HOW TO APPLY
Please send an email to Kathleen Witkowski at kwitkowski@missionsjc.com, fax or mail a letter addressed to the Mission’s Group Bookings at 26801 Ortega Highway, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675, Attention: Adopt-A-Class with the following:

1) Contact information for school and applying teacher.

2) Request letter on school letterhead, stating your class needs including number of people in group, type of programming desired, and if transportation is needed.

3) Details of the percentage of students on the free or reduced lunch program.

After this information is received, a determination will be made.  We cannot consider your school unless the complete proposal is received. A letter of award will be sent to you confirming whether your award was granted. The decision is based on the proposal’s completeness, percentage of students receiving a free or reduced cost lunch, and available resources.

We thank all of our Adopt-A-Class supporters and The Nicholas Endowment for their continued significant, impactful, and meaningful support that has truly mattered. During the 2018-2019 school year, 9,700 students benefited from the support.

“I had a blast at the mission and I loved it. Thank you for the free admission you gave all of us. I really enjoyed when we learned to make Adobe. Also, I liked when we learned about how the mission was built because it was fascinating.”

“My most favorite part that I most appreciate is you were thoughtful enough to pay for our wonderful 4th grade to be able to see how a real mission looks. It made a big difference by showing how the Native Americans and Spanish lived at the San Juan Capistrano mission.”

Amy – 4th Grade, Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program Student

“Thanks for the bus ride. It was very fun and exciting to see the mission life back in the early 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s. I learned about how to make an adobe brick. It was interesting to listen to the audio tour for each stop. We really appreciate all the money donated.”
