NEW! Remote Learning for School Year 2020-2021 Offered all year long!

Here at Mission San Juan Capistrano, we have worked tirelessly to develop distance learning programs to serve educators and students during the 2020-2021 school year and beyond. These experiences are designed to not only serve as a resources for fourth grade students in the Southern California area, many of whom have traditionally experienced the Mission as a rite of passage field trip, but for students of all ages throughout California and the world who are interested in learning about the diverse history and culture of early California. The Mission is dedicated to creating high quality content to support our teachers, parents, and students throughout the community and offer a fulfilling distance learning resources.

Pre-Recorded Experiences

Video Tour with Mission Education Director
Virtually explore the Mission at your own convenience with the Mission’s pre-recorded video tour. Each video segment highlights a different aspect of Mission history in 12 short, succinct clips. Video Tour aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1, 4.2.3, 4.2.4, 4.2.5, 4.2.6).
Duration: Approximately 1.5-5 minutes (per video clip)
Platform: Vimeo.com with a 1 week rental period

Exclusive 360° Architectural and Historical Views – A Video Series
Experience the history and beauty of the Mission as if you were standing here! From 360 degree sweeping views of the Mission grounds to up close, never before seen views of architecture and artifacts, you’ll see the Mission from every angle in 28 video clips. These can be viewed on a computer, mobile device or VR headset. If purchased as part of the 360 Degree View Video Package aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1, 4.2.3, 4.2.4, 4.2.5, 4.2.6).

Online Audio Tour – Only Offered in Special Packages
Featuring music, history and storytelling bringing to life the “Jewel of the Missions.” Tour aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1, 4.2.3, 4.2.4, 4.2.5, 4.2.6).

In Our Voice: Native American Storytelling Video, Presented by Jacque Tahuka Nunez, Native American Educator
Enjoy this special Native American Storytelling presentation by Jacque Tahuka Nunez. This video celebrates diversity while teaching about the lifestyles of the indigenous people of California. Video presentation aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1).
Duration: Approximately 50 minutes

In Our Voice: Native American Tushmal Singers and Bell Ringing Video
Descendants of the original builders of the Mission, the Acjachemen people, sing beautiful songs from their culture, talk about their people’s history, and share a special message for students. The video also includes a very special bell ringing featuring our Native American Bell ringers performing a celebratory ringing.
Duration: Approximately 20 minutes

Live Experiences

Virtual Field Trip with a Live Guide
During this interactive virtual field trip experience a Mission guide will lead your class on an exclusive tour of the Mission, exploring history and highlighting special historic artifacts and one-of-a-kind Mission locations such as the Serra Chapel and the Ruins of the Great Stone Church. This program is a private experience for the class/school that has booked and will not be open to other classes/schools to join. This program is designed to be taught as a Zoom Meeting experience (where students can see and hear each other) for groups of up to 70 students at a time. Program aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1, 4.2.3, 4.2.4, 4.2.5, 4.2.6).

Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Capacity: Maximum of 2 classes per session
Cost: $100 for 1 class (up to 35 students),
$90 for additional classes from the same school

Livestream Mission Walkthrough with a Guide
Every 2nd Wednesday of the month the Mission broadcasts a livestream walkthrough of the Mission grounds with an expert guide. During this program a Mission guide will provide an overview of Mission history while walking through the historic site. This program is livestreamed as a Zoom Webinar but is not guaranteed to be interactive due to the high volume of audience members. This program is not private and anyone who reserves a spot ahead of broadcast time may watch. Program aligns with CA HSS (4.2.1, 4.2.3, 4.2.5, 4.2.6).
Offered: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m. September 2020 – June 2021
Duration: 45 minutes
Platform: Zoom
Capacity: Unlimited*
Cost: $75 for 1 class (up to 35 students)
