As a descendant of Don Juan Forster, who purchased the Mission in 1845, Juan embraced both his family’s legacy and the Mission itself. Alongside his wife, Carolyn, Juan generously supported preservation and education, helping ensure this historic landmark could be enjoyed by generations to come. Juan shared his love of the Mission with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and helped thousands of students experience its history and beauty through his support of our Adopt-A-Class scholarship program. Juan’s legacy is one of family, history, generosity, and connection. Gifts made in Juan’s memory will honor his friendship and help preserve the place that meant so much to him. Mission San Juan Capistrano invites gifts to be made in memory of Arthur B. Birtcher, a devoted steward, supporter, and friend of the Mission and Mission Basilica. Art served on the Mission Preservation Foundation Board during the Gate House Preservation project and was a steadfast advocate for the preservation of Serra Chapel and historic Mission grounds. A longtime community leader, he dedicated his time and talents to numerous organizations throughout Southern California. Through his generosity and leadership, Art left a lasting mark on the Mission community. His commitment to preservation and service will remain an enduring part of his legacy. Gifts made in Art’s memory will honor his dedication and help preserve Mission San Juan Capistrano for future generations. Annually to promote the entire community as part of our Capistrano Lights tree lighting, we have ten community Christmas trees sponsored by key organizations in San Juan Capistrano. Each of these entities will have their very own Christmas tree at the Mission and will decorate it in a way to promote their service as well as contribute to an overall sense of good will to our visitors coming from all over the world.

Up to twelve beautifully decorated Christmas wreaths will hang throughout the Mission grounds throughout the run of Capistrano Lights Returns. Each sponsoring family will be invited to write a holiday message to be included on the Christmas wreath which will be placed in special locations at the Mission.

The Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program provides scholarships to low income students to enjoy a field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano or a digital distance learning experience. Where possible, funding for students includes a tour, and an education program allowing students to experience California history in hands on environment. The outdoor learning setting provides students with a memorable and inspired learning experience that they would otherwise not be able to enjoy.
