HISTORIC BELLS
CONSERVATION PROJECT
March 4 – March 8, 2019

Beginning Monday, March 4, the Preservation Department will begin conservation efforts to repair and conserve the four historic and two modern bronze bells in the Bell Wall or Campanario and at the Great Stone Church bell tower foot print.

After many decades on display and in continuous use, the conservation project will work to clean the bells and repair small hairline cracks, cracked previous epoxy fills and an uneven artificial green patina on the recast/replica large bells. Additionally, the bells will receive a protective wax coating to protect the 6 bronze bells from future oxidation.

This project has been funded by dollars raised for preservation of the historic Mission.

Did you know? The two largest bells hanging within the Campanario are replicas. They were recast in 2003. Today, the original two largest bells are hanging where they would have stood within the bell tower of the Great Stone Church. The two smaller bells hanging in the Campanario are original.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during preservation.

The Mission Preservation Foundation and Mission team is inviting gifts of support for ongoing preservation of California Landmark #200.
