Preservation Work in Action at Serra Chapel!

September 10, 2018 - October 30, 2018

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating indefinitely

Serra Chapel is one of California’s most historically significant chapels and is one of San Juan Capistrano’s original locations for the daily celebration of the Eucharist. At nearly 240 years, the Serra Chapel has survived into the 21st century as a place of deep meaning and faith tradition. In 2005, the Mission Preservation Foundation implemented a $1.8 million campaign to raise much-needed funds to preserve the Serra Chapel over a three-year work effort. After ten years since the Serra Chapel Conservation Project, a recent investigation was carried out to see if those conservation treatments are still preforming well. It has been determined that nearly $100,000 of maintenance is necessary in the coming months. Starting July 16, Mission San Juan Capistrano will begin efforts to clean and conserve the historic paintings in the Serra Chapel, Phase I of the Serra Chapel Decade Preservation Project. Phase II will begin September 10 and focus on conservation of the Golden Retablo followed by Phase III focusing on restoring the decorative finishes on the walls. Preservation work should be completed by late October. The Mission Preservation Foundation is inviting gifts of support for ongoing conservation to the Serra Chapel.
