#DidYouKnow that there was a time in the Mission’s history that the Sala served as the Mission’s chapel? By the late 1800s the Serra Chapel was deteriorating. Though it always remained standing the condition of the ceiling had become dangerous. The decision was made at that time to move church services into the Sala. It remained that way until then Pastor Father St. John O’Sullivan took on the large task of restoring Serra Chapel in the early 1920s.
The photographs shown are from the Mission’s museum collection and show the Serra Chapel, c. 1880s. You can see a drape near the ceiling placed there to catch falling debris. The other photograph from c. 1917 shows the Sala being used as the chapel. In both photographs you will notice several works of art that remain on exhibit at the Mission to this day.
