Digital Exhibit: Mission San Juan Capistrano “En Plein Air”

The term “en plein air” literally means “open air”. The term refers to a style of painting that grew from French Impressionism in the late 1800s and thrives to this day. Plein air paintings are painted outdoors allowing the artist to capture the light and colors in a scene.

This exhibit, generously supported by Deanna and Robert Saint-Aubin is normally on view in the Mission’s west wing but is being brought to you on line during this temporary closure. Please see our store for postcard images of some of  these paintings.

To support the Mission’s museum collection please contact Jennifer Ring, Museum Registrar at jring@missionsjc.com.

Digital Exhibit: Photography by Chris Lizotte

Welcome Mission San Juan Capistrano Digital Guest!

Mission San Juan Capistrano is proud to host its first very special digital art exhibit featuring the beautiful photography of artist, musician, and long time Mission San Juan Capistrano member, Chris Lizotte.  As a local resident, Chris Lizotte has spent nearly every day stopping by for a visit on the old Mission San Juan Capistrano grounds.  Over time, staff noticed that Chris was posting his beautiful photos of the Landmark on social media, often giving new perspectives on its most iconic views.

During the Mission’s closure caused by the COVID-19 global health crisis, the team approached Chris about the chance to display his beautiful images in a new way, “digitally,” to help bring some of the beauty of the place into the homes of those in shelter. Of course, Chris accepted our invitation and the exhibit was curated!

In these uncertain times, Mission San Juan Capistrano aims to bring a bit of its history, beauty, and hospitality into your home by way of its new Digital Resource Center and through new, special digital events like this exhibit.

We truly hope you enjoy Chris’s work here and note, that these images have never been curated as a collection before and are not on display on the actual Mission San Juan Capistrano grounds, thereby making this the first digital exhibit in the Mission’s history!

We are proud of Chris and his wife Kristy, whose handcrafted beautiful mosaic artwork is also featured in our actual and online store. Together this couple serves as an example of community stewardship and care of the Old Mission and we hope you enjoy their work. They are celebrated for helping us today and supporting the Mission during these challenging times. We truly hope these images bring a sense of beauty and inspiration to you no matter where you are!

We sincerely look forward to our eventual reopening and in the meantime encourage you to visit our Digital Resource Center for more “at home” experiences with Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Vaya Con Dios!

Sincerely,
Mechelle Lawrence Adams
Executive Director
