GREAT STONE TILE PROTECTION
In the month of August, extra care was taken to protect the significant historic tile floor inside the great stone church.
Initially a protective cloth layer was installed for protection. Later a layer of amended decomposed granite was lightly compacted on top to protect the two hundred plus year old tiles from further wear due to foot traffic.
Over the years, this system has worn away, under the constant foot traffic of visitors, exposing the original tiles beneath and threatening their integrity.
Mission Conservators and ARG Conservation Services, along with Stabilizer Solutions performed repairs and modifications to the existing protection system. Three cubic yards of loose, unstable material was removed and all existing protective cloth was analyzed and repaired. Next, fourteen cubic yards of new Sta-Lock modified decomposed granite were installed to provide a more substantial layer of protection than the original layer of amended decomposed layer. The material was sloped and graded towards a drainage system to divert any rainwater. This system will provide significant protection for years to come and compliments the site with a pleasingly natural feel and look. The compaction is further achieved by the footprints of the many visitors who reflect within this beautiful area.
