Preservation and Museum Status Reports

There is much to be done in order to preserve Mission San Juan Capistrano. The completion of the Great Stone Church allows us to begin a new restoration and preservation period for the "Jewel of the Missions", Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Net revenues are raised from Mission hosted corporate events and special events are directed toward preservation. Membership dues derived from the Preservation Society are directed toward much-needed repair and conservation. However, these programs are not enough to save the Mission. Donations and gifts from supporters are integral to realizing the dream of a more authentic, historically accurate, and a continued legacy for California's "Jewel of the Missions" - Mission San Juan Capistrano. The list of things to work on is extensive and requires funding and support from a variety of sources.

During 2005, a significant step forward was taken in creating a focus for the Mission's long term preservation. Mission San Juan Capistrano became the only mission in the State of California with an in-house Preservation Team comprised of full-time professionals with backgrounds in the field of conservation, preservation, and historic site management.

Today, the Team includes a Preservation Manager, a Buildings Conservator, a Museum Conservator, a Historian, and an Intern from California State University, Fullerton. Leading the efforts are the Pastor, a member of the Mission Preservation Foundation and the Executive Director of the Mission. Developing an in-depth Preservation Plan for the Mission that will identify the Mission's top preservation priorities for the next several years.

When visitors ask, "what needs to be done" or "how can I help" - the first step is to invest in membership. The second, is to consider assisting a specific project of preservation such as Serra Chapel, museum upgrades, on-site conservation, and the third is to share our need with those around you. Mission San Juan Capistrano is Orange County's Only Mission and it needs support of time, talent, and funding.
