Serra Chapel Adobe Repair and Lime Plastering
Summer 2007

The second level of the Serra Chapel received much needed conservation treatments during June and July of 2007.

Mission conservators, in conjunction with ARG Conservation Services, performed the necessary repairs. Some areas of the adobe construction were deteriorating and cracking, becoming structurally unsound and allowing moisture to penetrate into the walls. Several sections of adobe blocks were replaced while smaller voids were filled with an adobe patch mixture. Many window lintels suffered termite and water intrusion. These were stabilized in preparation for a three coat application of lime plaster and a roof flashing was then repaired to prevent water intrusion.

The first, and arguably most important coat was then applied by casting, or hurling at the historic adobe wall for maximum adhesion. Each subsequent coat was then applied to provide a protective skin while maintaining the irregular texture of the adobe construction beneath. Each coat was protected from the elements and allowed proper curing time.

In early September, the color coat of lime wash will be applied to provide a pleasing and historically correct aesthetic.
